All That Is Wrong With World

Perfect captured by this story about Sesame Street.

There’s something wrong with a picture from the original Sesame Street - little children riding bicycles without helmets.

Other scenes, too, from the original Sesame Street could be too seedy for today’s kids, CBS News correspondent Richard Schlesinger reports.

The first few seasons have just been released and come with, of all things, a warning.

“These early Sesame Street episodes are intended for grownups and may not suit the needs of today’s preschool child,” the warning reads.

“Sesame was created in the ’60s, and it was a bit edgier, if you will.” I never thought anyone would describe Sesame Street as “edgy,” but I guess in our overprotective culture today it isn’t a surprise.

“These early Sesame Street episodes are intended for grownups and may not suit the needs of today’s preschool child.” It’s a good thing they added this warning, because I’m certain that some incompetent parent would try to sue for some stupid thing their child did.

I often worry that intellectuals/counter-culturalists/po-mo people are getting sucked into increasingly narrow and segregated communities, where they are cut off from the larger mass of society, which continues down this stupid road without their influence. It’s striking to think that episodes of Sesame Street from the 60s are too racy to be shown on telivision today, at the same time as shows like South Park or Nip/Tuck are flourishing.

It might not be ‘living in nanny state’ but it sure seems to be heading that way. Wouldn’t you agree?

  5. darwin Says:

Well, no, because I assume those warnings were put on the boxes voluntarily by the corporation that released them- so more of a ‘corporate nanny free-market’.
