Apparently Kevin Smith director of Dogma was present at a protest of his film when it was first released.

Yeah, he talked about this on one of his podcasts a while ago, he was just cruising around his old neighborhood and saw the protest, and thought it would be funny to join in. Of course none of the old christian people who were protesting had ever seen the movie they were protesting, or any of his other work, so he went completely unnoticed.

I don’t see that as odd, if it’s true. As one of the interviewees implied, controversy can actually increase ticket sales.
