She Ain’t Qualifed for Journalism

Last Wednesday, while flying from Phoenix to the Alamo City on U.S. Airways Flight 207, a San Antonio man, Gil Anderson, witnessed something memorable.

Shortly before takeoff, he overheard a flight attendant tell a young uniformed soldier sitting in front of him:

“A lady in first-class wants to switch seats with you.”

The soldier accepted the offer and walked up to the first-class section.

“When the lady came back to our area, I had a tear in my eye,” Anderson said when he phoned this column soon after his plane landed. “I gave her a little round of applause.

“Then, by golly, everybody in that area started applauding,” he said in a voice tinged with emotion. “It was a very moving moment.”

Acknowledging the applause of Anderson and the other passengers, the first-class lady said simply:

“I did it because he deserves it.”

Its nice to see some in this country to have the good sense to honor our soldiers as heroes. More than we can say about some democrats.

Which democrats? Please cite a specific speech or incident.

    Thanks.

Come on I said ’some’. I was looking out for the team!

Anyway try this one on for size:

The Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., the current home of hundreds of wounded veterans from the war in Iraq, has been the target of weekly anti-war demonstrations since March. The protesters hold signs that read “Maimed for a Lie” and “Enlist here to die for Halliburton.”

Trust me they are out there and they almost all vote to the left.

And meanwhile in Walter Reed we find mold growing on the walls, unfit living, let alone care facilities and soldiers dying from mistakes made when an administration chooses to fund wars over taking care of those that fought in war. I guess as long as they aren’t holding a sign they are respecting the soldiers.

  4. Jamie Says:

Oh, and I’ve actually been to Walter Reed. This is because I’m not afraid to drive at night.

Actually, Democrats seem big on stressing how much they support the troops. Then again, I don’t consider myself a Democrat. Why exactly is it so sensible to honor soldiers as heroes? They’re doing a job just like anyone else (except the retired and unemployed). Personally, I’d be just as inclined to honor electrical power installers or truck drivers. They accept a dangerous job and on top of that it actually benefits the economy.

  6. darwin Says:

Ok, you have many examples of democrats who don’t support the war. Now please provide the example of democrats disrespecting actual soldiers that I asked you for.

  7. steve Says:

Its hard to see how you are honoring a solider by telling him he has been maimed for a lie. Perhaps you can explain to me how that is showing honor.

  8. Jamie Says:

It’s also hard to understand how you are honoring a soldier by failing to meet medical standards of a 3rd world country. Glad you discuss that here. Thanks.

hahahahah I was about to write a response where I said something like: so you think it’s disrespectful to tell an opressed woman in some opressive culture that her life is hell because her society is run by facist idiots? And then I realized- you’re being a relativist towards military culture.

You think that it IS disrespecful to tell a soldier that the president got us into a bad war, even though you’re not judging anything that soldier did, or even if you’re thanking that soldier for his service at teh same time. You think it’s disrespectful to soldiers to question the war, because they come from a miitary culture where you don’t question your commander, and where your persoanl honor is dependant upon the honor of your country and your superiors.

We’re not allowed to condemn stupid things the military does because if we do, then we’re not respecting the members of the military culture- ie the soldiers. It’s a textbook case of cultural relativism- you can’t condemn the bad parts of another culture, because everyone deserves our respect.

It’s hilarious that this is influencing your thinking in this way. But I can’t see any other reason why you would think that condemning the president’s decisions is disrepectful to soldiers.

It’s hard to see a soldier be maimed for a lie and not say anything about it. Is it honorable to allow the soldiers to sacrifice for Bush’s talking point of the day? Are there WMDs? oh we’re bringing democracy! we must bring stability to the region, with our guns. We are fighting the terrorists! holding back a civil war? hey, at least we got rid of saddam…
