I Wonder How many People’s Rights

Were violated to get this information.

In a show of force, the NYPD mobilized hundreds of anti-terrorism cops last night after an Internet report of a “dirty bomb” threat targeting the city surfaced, authorities said.

Better to be dead of radiation sickness then let government with judicial and legislative oversight listen in on citizen to non-citizen phone calls outside this country without a warrant.

By trying to save the country George Bush has ruined this country. It boils my blood.

Wow dude, you fucked yourself on this one. Did you even read the article.

First of all, the article specifically stated that the terrorist threat was first sent to authorities as an explicit threat on a videotape, and that authorities later took the threat seriously after finding references to it on the internet. So yeah, NO ONE’s rights were violated, and none of the laws you’re talking about favoring were invoked or neccessary.

Secondly, the article states that they never found aything- as usual, this was just another empty threat, meant to cause fear, confusion, and discord within our country- exactly what we accomplish when the legislature tries to pass laws eroding our civil liberties.

This case is a perfect example AGAINST your argument- phoen taps on citizens were not needed in order to get this information, and even after they got the information, it doesn’t look like there was ever even a real threat.

    1. It’s unclear that phone conversations that were intercepted did not play a role in issuing the alert. It could be the case that it was not reported for counter terrorism reasons. This is why I titled the post ‘I wonder how many people’s rights’ indicating thats it unclear how many if any were ‘violated’.

    2. We had lots of ‘empty threats in the past’ Im sure intelligence on the 9\11 plans was considered empty by some agents prior to their realization.

    3. Its why laws passed to better enable verifying a threat as being empty leads to ’cause fear’, ‘confusion’, and ‘discord’.

If it its the case that no phone intelligence was uses to determine the threat then i would agree this would be a bad example for my position. But then again i did account for that variance in the title.
