the other great part about capitalism is that it doesn't remove other forms of motivation. If you want to go invent something, just for the hell of it, you can. All you need is the money to do so, and viola! you're free to invent what you want. However, the competition motivation adds an extra boost for important inventions.

The issue isnt whether competition generated by captialsim is the absolute best motivator but whether its more effective than any other kind. Certainly when tyring to impress mary jane so she will be your g-friend you write a great poem, but Mary Jane aint going to motivate you to find a better way to fasten steal girders to a structure. But that other company will when they can get it done faster and cheaper becase they found a better way.

On the whole competition is the best generator of innovation. Nothing comes close which is not to say other form of motivation can cause creation as well. Its just that competion is most reliable and effective.

what alternate world are you living in. Have you heard of rage, love etc. Maybe competition dosen't stoke everyone's fire quite as much as it does for a good little capitalist.

I'm so pleased to think that tonight some little cpitalist is planning how to cut down another tree to bring us mooore good things or maybe bringing us power for our cars from corn.

i'd say that belief is pretty much completely independent of capitalism. I mean, even when the government does get too controlling (near-communism) the liberals still say that there needs to be more protections against the greedy capitalists (actual communism). Hell, even when communsim fails, they still say that it's because the government was controlling things wrong. I don't think there are many situations in which a bleeding-heart actually thinks that the government made a mistake.

Wait a minute, I thought that the naive belief most liberals have about big government being the solution to all problems was EXACTLY what capitalism was best at producing.

Darwin-

Its more than just the quality of the film the show is shot with. I should say that while cable has been around since the early eighties it has taken a decade or so to really pull viewers from the national broadcasters.

And if anything, it was series produced by HBO and not not west wing that has lead to an increase in quality at the national level.

Trampage-

Few things get the creative juices flowing like the competition capitalism generates. But i will agree that capitalism plays an equally important role in finding ways to make products more accessible to more people. Primarily through the competition of finding creative ways to produce things cheaper.

Boose-

Now that you mention it capitalism also can't generate that naive belief most liberals have about big government being the solution to all problems.

Damn i guess there are things capitalism cant do after all. That must be why liberal guilt was created.
