A Comeback for Lamarckian Evolution?

Two new studies show that the effects of a mother’s early environment can be passed on to the next generation.

Humans don’t discover things that are true, they discover things they want to be true. This is one of the big problems with global warming.

Apparently Obama Gives Logos Too

A while back Steve mentioned his affinity for Obama’s logo. Looks like he wasn’t the only one who liked it:

The NFL obviously influenced by the dynamism and depth.

Chrysler/Jeep like the colors and the red road going into the distance.  The theme that jumps out is good things on the horizon, so apparently Obama gives not just hope, but hopeful logos. Except in this one:

 This one is just stupid.

Obama Gives Hope

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

But not much else. At a town hall meeting, a homeless lady implores Obama for help:

“I have an urgent need, unemployment and homelessness, a very small vehicle for my family and I to live in,” Hughes told Obama Tuesday at a town hall rally in Fort Myers, Florida, as he pushed for passage of his stimulus plan in the Senate. “The housing authority has two years waiting lists, and we need something more than the vehicle and the parks to go to. We need our own kitchen and our own bathroom. Please help.”

Hughes said she had been homeless after her son lost his job and, subsequently, their home. Although her son has been looking for work, Hughes says, so far, no luck.

They are indicative of probably a lot of Americans who need help. Interesting in the story was this bit:

“Basically, I offered Ms. Hughes and her son the opportunity to stay in my home rent-free for as long as they need to,” Thompson told WBBH-TV in Fort Myers. “I’m not a millionaire, I’m not rich, but this is what I can do for someone if they need it.”

That’s right, private charity stepping in when the government cannot. Maybe those crazy libertarians were right, and we really don’t need the government to cure all our ills. Maybe we just need community…ah screw it, when else are we gonna get to blow 800 billion dollars?

Economic Stimulus via Immigration Reform

We need more of this kind of thinking

“All you need to do is grant visas to two million Indians, Chinese and Koreans,” said Shekhar Gupta, editor of The Indian Express newspaper. “We will buy up all the subprime homes. We will work 18 hours a day to pay for them. We will immediately improve your savings rate — no Indian bank today has more than 2 percent nonperforming loans because not paying your mortgage is considered shameful here. And we will start new companies to create our own jobs and jobs for more Americans.”

This guy reminds me of an idea I had this past Sunday:  if we gave amnesty to the 20 million illegal immigrants working in our country today, and allowed them to bring their families into our country, we could massively stimulate the economy in several ways.

First, we would increase the size of the workforce. Initially this would push down wages, but I think this would push down prices as well. Lower labor costs would be great for entrepreneurs (you know, those folks who invent new ways to create wealth).

Second, because of the population bump, demand for goods and services would receive a nice bump as well.

Third, Mexican immigrants send large portions of their earnings back to thier families in Mexico. This amounts to billions of dollars disappearing from our economy. If their families were here, that money would be spent here.

Fourth, more immigrants means more entrepreneurs.

A savings bump mixed with low labor costs, lots of money to lend, low interest rates, and high entrepreneurship would give our economy the swift kick it needs to get going again.

America was built by hardworking immigrants. Somehow we forgot that.

Liberal Bigots Learn Important Lesson

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

Chicago Boyz has this to say about some liberals that dressed like Arabs and then visited Alabama to document the inevitable prejudice behavior of the locals.

What Woldt discovered was not the prejudices of the small-town, southern, white American but instead the prejudices and stereotypes of contemporary leftist academia. Woldt expected to find prejudice not because she had already seen it but because her education indoctrinated her to expect it in others. This little incident opens a window on the insular, elitist and bigoted world of leftists in contemporary academia.

With their extreme sensitivity to race and ethnic treatment in contemporary America its hard to not see this small subset of liberals as one of the most bigoted group in America.

A Congressman’s Perspective

On the hours leading up to the financial crisis.

I’m sure the reason why most of this was not made public was because they didn’t want to people to panic. However, hearing this explanation makes me much more incline to think their was an actual problem that warranted quick action.

Obituary

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

Mom forwarded this to me.

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since  his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: Knowing when to come in out of the rain; Why the early bird gets the worm; Life isn’t always fair; and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don’t spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in  charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an Aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and  criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn’t defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers;
I Know My Rights
I Want It Now
Someone Else Is To Blame
I’m A Victim

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.
